Spiritus Draconis

The Spiritus Draconis, “Spirit of the Dragon,” provides an opportunity to formally recognize Air Force Emergency Managers who have demonstrated exceptional performance, leadership, service, and significant contributions to the Air Force Emergency Management program and career field.

The recipient of the Spiritus Draconis receives a proclamation certificate, medallion, and the recognition bestowed to the honoree forthwith.

Nominee Criteria

In order to be eligible for the Spiritus Draconis a nominee must have been an Air Force Emergency Management professional working under the under the auspices of the Air Force Emergency Management (EM) Program. This includes Active Duty, Guard, Reserve members, civil service civilians, and contractors serving:

    ✔︎   within an EM Flight.
    ✔︎ as an AF EM instructor (i.e., 3E9 technical school, Silver Flag, etc.).
    ✔︎ as an AF EM functional or subject matter expert at HAF, DRU, FOA, PSU, MAJCOM or AFIMSC detachment.
    ✔︎ as an EM Flight Officer.
 
The nominee must be a member of the AFEM Association for at least one year prior to the nomination. 

Note: Retirees that have served in the capacities listed above are also eligible to be nominated for Spiritus Draconis.

Nominator Criteria

The individual nominating a member for the Spiritus Draconis (the nominating official) must be an AFEM Association member in good standing as a lifetime member or must have been a member for at least three (3) years at the time of nomination.

Nomination must be submitted on the prescribed AFEM Association Nomination provided below and include full payment for the associated medallion/certificate.

Submission Timeline

The submission for nomination must be received NLT 60 days prior to the desired presentation date to allow time for processing.

Funding

The nominator and AFEM Association will share the costs for Spiritus Draconis Medallion, certificate, and all other costs associated with obtaining, processing, handling, and postage.

Approval

Upon nomination receipt, if the above criteria have been met, the AFEM Association will convene a board to review the nomination and provide written approval recommendations to the Association’s President and Vice President within 24 hours of convening.

Criteria for Presentation of the Spiritus Draconis

The ceremony for presenting the Spiritus Draconis must be held in a location suitable for the honor and must include the reading of the proclamation and presentation of the medallion and certificate.

If presented as part of a retirement ceremony, the Spiritus Draconis must be presented at a suitable timeframe within the schedule of events commensurate with the honor being bestowed. It must be presented prior to the member’s shadow box (preferably right before shadow box presentation within schedule of events).

The honoree is authorized to wear the medal upon presentation, during the ceremony, and any associated social event.

If there are other Spirit Draconis recipients in attendance, they too are authorized to wear the medallion during the ceremony and associated social events. However, wear of the Spiritus Draconis medallion outside the events prescribed is not appropriate, nor authorized.
