Every 3E9X1 graduate earns and receives a coin at graduation

The Air Force Emergency Management Association, serving as the “Guardian of the Coin,” guarantees that each graduate of the 3E9X1 Apprentice Course receives a heritage coin upon graduation, continuing the practice of “paying it forward.”

To date, the Air Force Emergency Management Association has provided over 2,600 coins to the Air Force Emergency Management Schoolhouse to be presented to each new 3E931 upon graduation so that every 3E9 in the US Air Force has a coin to carry on the tradition.

Front

The USAF Disaster Response Force symbol approved by the DoD Board of Heraldry in 1968 adorns the front of the coin.

Prior to 2001, many Disaster Preparedness and Readiness coins floated around from base to base and from command to command. CMSgt (Ret) Marcella “Marcy” Burks is credited with designing and funding the first and most widely known functional coin.

Back

Our own Smoky Joe is prominent on the back along with the phrase ” Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler”, translates to “Let the good times roll! The idea is that all 242s and 3E9s work hard in a very challenging career field but also enjoy life and all it has to offer.

Chief Burks minted the coins three times for a total of 700 coins.
