Every 3E9X1 graduate earns and receives a coin at graduation
The Air Force Emergency Management Association, serving as the “Guardian of the Coin,” guarantees that each graduate of the 3E9X1 Apprentice Course receives a heritage coin upon graduation, continuing the practice of “paying it forward.”
To date, the Air Force Emergency Management Association (AFEMA) has provided more than 2,600 AF EM Coins to the Air Force Emergency Management Schoolhouse. Each coin is presented to a newly qualified 3E931 upon graduation, marking the individual’s successful completion of the rigorous training required to enter the Air Force Emergency Management career field.
The AF EM Coin is more than a keepsake—it is a symbol of accomplishment, commitment, and belonging to a proud professional legacy. Recipients do not simply receive the coin; they earn it through their dedication, perseverance, and successful completion of the training necessary to serve as an Air Force Emergency Manager.
By presenting a coin to every graduate, AFEMA ensures that every 3E9 entering the U.S. Air Force Emergency Management career field has the opportunity to carry this symbol of service and continue a tradition shared by generations of Emergency Management and Disaster Preparedness professionals. Each coin represents not only the achievement of the individual who earned it, but also their place in the enduring history and heritage of the Air Force Emergency Management community.

Front
The USAF Disaster Response Force symbol approved by the DoD Board of Heraldry in 1968 adorns the front of the coin.
Prior to 2001, many Disaster Preparedness and Readiness coins floated around from base to base and from command to command. CMSgt (Ret) Marcella “Marcy” Burks is credited with designing and funding the first and most widely known functional coin.

Our own Smoky Joe is prominent on the back along with the phrase ” Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler”, translates to “Let the good times roll! The idea is that all 242s and 3E9s work hard in a very challenging career field but also enjoy life and all it has to offer.
